What do adventure motorcycle tyres really feel like across South Africa’s Karoo? Nico Christodoulakis shares his real-world experience riding Motoz tyres on his Honda Africa Twin across gravel, sand, rock and everything in between.

Before joining the Karoo is Calling off-road adventure motorcycle tour, Nico Christodoulakis completed the Introduction to Off-Road Adventure Motorcycle Riding course with Motorrad Adventures, building the foundational skills needed for multi-day riding across varied terrain.
As part of preparing for the tour, Nico fitted a Motoz Dual Venture tyre on the front and a Motoz Tractionator Adventure tyre on the rear of his Honda Africa Twin, looking for a setup that could handle the mix of long tar sections, gravel roads, and technical off-road conditions the Karoo is known for.
What follows is his experience from the saddle...
Are Motoz Tractionator Adventure Tyres Good for South African Adventure Riding?
From my experience riding through the Karoo, the Motoz Dual Venture (front) and Tractionator Adventure (rear) performed well across a mix of Karoo terrain, from long tar sections to gravel, sand, and rocky tracks. More than anything, they made the ride feel easier to manage and allowed me to focus on enjoying the experience.
From Everyday Riding to Real Adventure
I’ve been riding adventure motorcycles since July 2022. Before that, I was on a Vespa, but I wanted something that could take me further, into the parts of South Africa you simply can’t reach by car.
That’s what led me to my Honda Africa Twin, and ultimately to rides like the Karoo is Calling tour.
Before joining the tour, I also completed the Introduction to Off-Road Adventure Motorcycle Riding course with Motorrad Adventures, which gave me a solid foundation and helped me feel more prepared heading into the trip.
Most of my riding is mixed, tar to get to where I’m going, and then gravel and off-road once the real exploring starts. With two young kids at home, I don’t get out as often as I’d like, maybe one or two proper trips a year, so when I do ride, it needs to count.
Going into this tour, I still considered myself somewhere between a novice and intermediate off-road rider. I’ve always felt the bike is capable of more than I am, and that there’s always something new to learn when riding in South African conditions.
Switching to Motoz Tyres Before the Karoo Tour
Before this trip, I was running Metzeler Karoo 3 tyres. I liked them for the kind of mixed riding I do, but they didn’t last very long. My last set was finished after around 3000 km.
So before the Karoo is Calling tour, a set of Motoz tyres was fitted to my bike, a Motoz Dual Venture on the front and a Motoz Tractionator Adventure on the rear.
I had read a bit about them beforehand, and I was interested to see how this specific combination would handle the variety of terrain we were about to ride, gravel roads, sand, corrugations, rocky sections, and everything in between. This review is based on that specific front and rear tyre combination, fitted for mixed-terrain riding in South African conditions.
Bedding-In Period: What to Expect
The first 100 km took a bit of getting used to. Initially, the rear felt slightly unsettled, almost like it wasn’t fully planted. But once that bedding-in period passed, the tyres started to feel more natural.
On tar, the bike felt stable and easier to read.
On-Road Performance: More Comfortable Than Expected
One thing that stood out for me was how comfortable the tyres felt on tar.
For something that looks quite aggressive, they felt:
Stable at speed
Predictable through corners
Easy to ride over longer distances
I’m not someone who pushes hard on tar, but I felt comfortable through corners and didn’t feel like I needed to overthink braking.
What really surprised me was how quiet they were. Compared to other tyres I’ve used, these were noticeably quieter, which made long highway sections more enjoyable.

Karoo Gravel Roads: Finding a Rhythm
Once we hit the Karoo’s gravel roads, things started to come together. At first, there was a bit of adjustment, but that’s normal moving from tar to dirt.
After that, the bike felt more settled, I could carry speed more comfortably and, corners felt more predictable. On typical South African gravel roads, the tyres felt consistent and didn’t catch me off guard.
Sand Performance: No Surprises
We didn’t ride a lot of deep sand on this tour, because of the high rain fall experienced by the region we were in, but in the sections we did encounter sandy patches, the bike felt manageable. The front stayed fairly steady, and I didn’t experience any sudden movement or instability.
For a heavier bike like the Africa Twin, that made a difference.
Corrugations and Rough Terrain
Corrugations, or "washboard" off-road surfaces are never enjoyable, but the tyres handled them as well as I could expect.
Across rough sections, ruts, and loose rocks, the bike felt composed and didn’t feel unpredictable once. They simply gripped into the terrain and just kept going.
Rocky Sections and Technical Riding
Rocky terrain is always a bit unpredictable. But I didn’t feel any sudden loss of control at any time on the tour. On descents, using engine braking, everything stayed in line and manageable.
I felt like I could place the bike where I wanted it to go, which made a big difference in those sections.
Riding Progression Over the Tour
Day one felt like a reset. I hadn’t ridden off-road in nearly a year, and those first few kilometres took some getting used to. But it came back quicker than I expected.
Then something shifted.
I stopped looking down at the front wheel. I started looking ahead, riding the line, and taking things in.
At some point, it clicked: "It’s just dirt. This bike was built for this."

What the Motoz Tyres Allowed Me to Do
For me, the biggest difference wasn’t just grip; it was what I didn’t have to think about. I wasn’t constantly worrying about the surface.
I could focus on riding, take in the scenery, and really enjoy the experience.
And maybe push a little more than I normally would… much to my father-in-law’s concern
Durability: A Pleasant Surprise
After the tour, the Tractionators still looked almost new.
We covered roughly 2000 km in total:
1200 km of highway (To the start of the tour and home again)
±800 km of mixed off-road terrain (The actual Karoo is Calling Tour)
And I didn’t notice any real wear or damage.
Compared to what I’ve experienced before, that stood out. It’s reassuring knowing I won’t need to replace them before my next ride.
Final Thoughts
For me, these tyres changed how the bike felt across different terrain.
They made things feel:
More predictable
Easier to manage
More enjoyable over distance
Would I ride them again? Yes, definitely.
Who are they for? In my opinion, these tyres are perfect for riders who mix tar and gravel, people wanting to explore beyond the main roads, and anyone looking for something that lasts and feels consistent.
The only downside for me was that initial bedding-in period, after that, they felt great.
The Moments That Stay With You
Two moments stand out on the recent tour in the Karoo.
Riding through a game farm with wildebeest, springbok, and blesbok moving alongside us — something I won’t forget.
And the water and mud sections on the final day. Not because they were easy, but because I handled them better than I expected.
In One Sentence
An incredible experience, unforgettable views, and a ride that stays with you — made even better by an adventure bike tyre that just lets you get on with it… and if you enjoy Karoo lamb, even better...

What are the best 50/50 adventure motorcycle tyres for gravel and tar roads?
The best 50/50 adventure motorcycle tyres are those that offer a strong balance between off-road grip and long-distance tar road comfort. For riders tackling gravel roads, rocky terrain, sand and highway touring, tyres like the Motoz Tractionator Adventure, Bridgestone AX41, Michelin Anakee Wild and Metzeler Karoo 4 are among the most popular choices in the adventure riding community.
In our experience riding across South Africa’s Karoo and mixed terrain routes, the Motoz Tractionator Adventure tyres stood out for their excellent gravel stability, strong traction in loose terrain and impressive longevity during long-distance adventure touring.
However, it is important to keep in mind that if you are looking for a tyre that can handle both off-road and tar riding, the moment you leave the tar — even if it is only for 20 km — you are 100% off-road. That means tyre choice should always prioritise rider confidence, predictability and grip in dirt conditions first, especially on heavier adventure motorcycles. The right tyre ultimately depends on your riding style, terrain and how much technical off-road riding you realistically plan to do.
