Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Review: Real-World Performance on the Karoo Wanderlust Tour...

When I finally made the decision to ride in South Africa, a trip I had wanted to do for years, I chose to join Motorrad Adventures on their Karoo Wanderlust Tour, a professionally guided adventure motorcycle expedition through the remote gravel roads, mountain passes and vast semi-desert landscapes of the Karoo.
Motorrad Adventures specialises in off-road and mixed-terrain adventure riding, so I knew the route would properly test both rider and machine in real-world conditions, not just scenic tarmac. With a dedicated guide team, support vehicle and structured logistics in place, the focus remained exactly where it should be: on riding and experiencing the landscape.
When it came to choosing a bike from the fleet, I had access to their larger-capacity machines such as the BMW 1250 GS and BMW 900 GS, but I deliberately chose to rent one of their Royal Enfield Himalayan 450's, for a journey covering mostly gravel and remote terrain, simplicity, balance and range matter more than prestige or top speed.
After approximately 1,600 km over six days riding through South Africa’s Karoo with Motorrad Adventures, here is my honest experience.
Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 First Impressions: Competent, Inviting and Unintimidating...
Before this trip, I had only ever sat on a Himalayan 450 once, on a rainy autumn day back in Poland. Seeing it again in the warm Graaff-Reinet sun at the start of the Karoo Wanderlust Tour was a completely different experience.
It looked sturdy and purposeful. The colour, Kaza Brown, suited the Karoo landscape perfectly. The handlebar position, controls and seating felt natural immediately, even at my 186 cm height and 90 kg weight.
It wasn’t flashy.
It didn’t try too hard.
It simply looked competent.
During the first day of riding, I noticed that both the Motorrad Adventures lead and sweep riders were also on Royal Enfield Himalayans. That gave me additional confidence in the platform; it was clearly a bike that the team trusted in the same terrain we were riding.
That impression of quiet capability stayed with me throughout the tour.
Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 Performance Across South African Terrain...
The Himalayan 450 proved to be one of those bikes where you simply:
“Point it in the direction you want to go and try not to disturb it too much.”
Riding across remote gravel roads, rocky passes, mountain elevations and long open stretches of Karoo landscape gave the bike a proper real-world test.

Suspension, Stability & Tyres
The stock Showa suspension was genuinely impressive. It felt:
Confident on gravel
Secure over rocky sections
Stable through mountain passes
Composed over bumps without bottoming out
The bike was fitted with Motoz Tractionator Adventure tyres, which proved to be an excellent match for South African conditions. On loose Karoo gravel and uneven terrain, traction remained consistent and predictable. I was able to concentrate on admiring the stunning landscape rather than fighting for grip.
For mixed-terrain riding, that balance between suspension and tyre setup makes a meaningful difference.
Handling & Off-Road Confidence...
The Himalayan 450 felt consistent, predictable and stable throughout the tour in the Karoo. Its low centre of gravity makes the 198 kg weight feel lighter than the numbers suggest, especially in more technical terrain.
On rocky and curving mountain passes, there were moments where my role was simply not to disturb the balance between suspension, throttle response and braking. That is always a sign of a well-sorted adventure motorcycle.
The ergonomics worked equally well seated and standing. The wide footpegs were comfortable even with larger motocross boots over multiple full riding days.

Engine Performance & Real-World Rideability...
The 450cc engine delivers linear power with torque available low in the rev range, exactly what you want for adventure riding.
It is obviously slower in a straight line than mid or larger capacity bikes, but that is not the point here.
For this type of journey, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 offers:
Low fuel consumption
Over 300 km range per tank
Predictable acceleration
Incredible on and off-road handling
Practical highway capability
At sustained highway speeds, wind protection could be better, and you may feel some buffeting over longer distances. But for mixed-use travel dominated by gravel and remote riding, it is more than adequate.
The single-cylinder engine has a slightly agricultural character, utilitarian rather than dramatic, but entirely appropriate for its purpose.
Comfort Over 1,500 Kilometres...
After six days and approximately 1,500 km riding in varied terrain, comfort becomes critical.
The Himalayan 450 has one of the most comfortable seats I have experienced on an adventure motorcycle, superior, in my view, to several competitors in its class.
The ergonomics support both seated touring and standing riding over long days in the saddle.
That balance makes a noticeable difference.

Comparison to Other Lightweight Adventure Bikes...
I have ridden several other lightweight and mid-capacity adventure motorcycles, including the KTM 390 Adventure, CF Moto 450, Honda CRF 250L and Yamaha Tenere 700.
The Honda CRF 250L has a legendary reputation and is the lightest of the group. However, it produces roughly half the horsepower of the Himalayan 450, which makes longer highway stretches more demanding. Its suspension is also quite soft out of the box and would require tuning to match the Himalayan’s stock capability.
The CF Moto 450, despite strong media hype, was a disappointment for me personally. While it offers a twin-cylinder engine and appealing sound, I found the ergonomics cramped and the seat the most uncomfortable of any adventure bike I have ridden. For smaller riders, it may work well, but for my build, it was not ideal.
The KTM 390 Adventure is the sportiest proposal. The package is competent and performance-focused, and you can feel the “Ready to Race” DNA. However, when riding remote terrain like the Karoo, simplicity and long-term reliability matter. For that reason, I felt more at ease on the Himalayan.
As for the Yamaha Tenere 700, which I personally admire, it remains an outstanding machine. But for this particular journey, given the terrain profile and range considerations, I would still choose the Himalayan 450 again unless I had access to my own Tenere.
Final Thoughts...
I would do the Karoo Wanderlust trip again in a heartbeat. Anytime....
Now that I have experienced the Karoo with the Motorrad Adventures team, planning how to return to riding in South Africa is constantly at the back of my mind, whether for more mountain passes, Namibia, or the Garden Route.
Irrespective of direction, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 will firmly be on my list again.

“For this kind of terrain and this kind of journey, the Himalayan 450 simply makes sense. It allowed me to focus on the ride, the landscape and the experience — and that, ultimately, is what adventure riding is about.” - Tycjan Bielecki
Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 – Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 good for gravel roads in South Africa?
Yes. Its low centre of gravity, predictable throttle response and stable suspension make it well-suited to South African gravel roads. During the Karoo Wanderlust Tour, it remained composed and confidence-inspiring across loose surfaces and rocky sections.
What fuel range can you expect from the Himalayan 450?
In real-world mixed-terrain riding, the bike delivered over 300 km per tank. For remote regions like the Karoo, where fuel stops can be far apart, that range provides meaningful peace of mind.
Is the Himalayan 450 comfortable for long-distance adventure touring?
Yes. After approximately 1,500 km over six days, comfort remained strong. The seat is among the most comfortable in its class, and the ergonomics support both seated touring and extended standing riding.
How does the Himalayan 450 compare to other lightweight adventure bikes?
Compared to models such as the KTM 390 Adventure, Honda CRF 250L and CF Moto 450, the Himalayan 450 offers a strong balance of comfort, usable power and simplicity. While it may not be the most powerful in the class, its practicality and stability make it highly capable for mixed-terrain travel.
Is the Himalayan 450 powerful enough for highway riding?
It is fully capable of highway speeds, though wind protection could be improved for extended high-speed travel. For predominantly off-road and mixed-use journeys, the power delivery is well matched to its purpose.
Would the Himalayan 450 suit a round-the-world trip?
For riders prioritising fuel efficiency, mechanical simplicity and manageable weight, the Himalayan 450 would be a strong contender for long-distance or global adventure travel.
