Day 1: Graaff-Reinet to Duiwekloof
Before embarking on a thrilling day of off-road adventure motorcycling, the Motorrad Adventures team will host an informative workshop that focuses on essential adventure bike riding techniques. This session is designed to provide you with valuable insights and practical tips to help you build a solid foundation for navigating the off-road sections of our journey. We're heading towards the Baviaanskloof. This narrow valley spans nearly 200 kilometers and is hemmed in by two mountain ranges: the Baviaanskloof Mountains to the north and the Kouga Mountains to the south. Along the way, we will encounter diverse terrain, including well-maintained gravel roads, rocky tracks, and challenging mountain passes. This variety will test our riding skills and offer breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscapes. As we approach the small village of Steytlerville, we will pass through the Valley of the Flags. The cliffs beside the road are painted with colourful flags representing the historical national flags of South Africa. We will stop in Steytlerville to have lunch at the historic Royal Hotel, established in 1896 by the knighted Sir Kauffman Richardson. You will also notice that Main Street is unusually wide. It was designed in 1876 to allow ox wagons to turn around. After enjoying a delicious lunch, we will continue our journey towards the Baviaanskloof, a world heritage site, and reach our accommodation in the afternoon. Our lodge, nestled in the heart of the mountainous region, offers a peaceful retreat from the rugged landscape. During dinner, we will reflect on the day's adventures and prepare for the journey ahead.
Day 2: Duiwekloof to Knysna
Today, our thrilling motorcycle journey takes us from the rugged Kouga Mountains to the sparkling Indian Ocean. After breakfast, we ride diverse terrain ranging from gravel roads to exciting off-road sections — perfect for adventure motorcyclists seeking variety and challenge. Along the way, we pause for a coffee break at the quaint African Aloe café in Uniondale. Uniondale is a charming town steeped in local legend, famous for the Uniondale Ghost Story about a mysterious hitchhiker who vanishes from cars along the road between Uniondale and Willowmore — a spooky tale adding intrigue to the route. Our ride continues toward Knysna, navigating gravel roads leading to the iconic Prince Alfred Pass — a must-ride bucket-list route for any adventure motorcyclist in South Africa. Built in the 1800s under the legendary road builder Sir Thomas Bain, this scenic pass winds from the Karoo’s interior down to the Garden Route coast near Knysna. Halfway through the pass, we stop in the peaceful village of De Vlugt for lunch. Known for its warm farm-style hospitality and wood-fired pizzas, De Vlugt offers stunning views over the Keurbooms River — a perfect spot to relax and soak in the tranquil surroundings. We arrive in Knysna, a premier coastal adventure hub on South Africa’s Garden Route, where we check in at accommodation near the vibrant waterfront. With its unique blend of forests, lagoons, and ocean roads, Knysna is a dream destination for motorcycle travel. The town also hosts the legendary Simola Hill Climb, a thrilling motorsport event celebrating speed and precision engineering. To cap off the day, we enjoy a breathtaking sunset dinner cruise aboard the John Benn, South Africa’s only paddle steamer, gliding across the picturesque Knysna Lagoon toward the iconic Knysna Heads.

Day 3: Knysna to Rooiberg
After breakfast, our adventure motorcycle tour departs from the vibrant coastal town of Knysna, heading deep into South Africa’s mountainous heartland. This day promises an unforgettable mix of gravel riding, historic mountain passes, and scenic backroads — ideal for riders exploring the Garden Route and Klein Karoo by motorbike. Our journey begins with a thrilling ride through the Outeniqua Mountains, toward the remote and rugged Rooiberg Mountains, nestled in the Assegaay Bosch Nature Reserve. We’ll navigate sections of the Seven Passes Road, including the legendary Phantom Pass, a national monument offering exceptional riding through ancient forests and tight switchbacks. We’ll make a coffee stop at the Green Shed Roastery in Wilderness — a rider favourite known for its locally roasted coffee and legendary chocolate brownies. Next, we tackle the sweeping Outeniqua Pass — a scenic, paved route built in the mid-20th century that connects the coast to the Little Karoo. This pass delivers panoramic views and smooth riding, linking us to the iconic Route 62 — one of South Africa’s top motorcycle touring routes. We continue cruising along Route 62, with a blend of gravel and open-road sections, before stopping for a hearty Karoo-style lunch near Calitzdorp — famous for its hospitality and local cuisine. After lunch, we face one of the day’s top highlights: the Rooiberg Pass. This 14 km gravel mountain pass, built in 1928, connects Calitzdorp to Van Wyksdorp. With 69 bends and 6 hairpin turns, it's a must-ride for dual-sport and adventure riders. The pass cuts through fynbos-covered ridges, and in winter, bursts with blooming orange aloes, making it both a technical challenge and a visual feast. We end our day at the tranquil Rooiberg Lodge, nestled at the base of the mountains. It’s the perfect place to relax after a full day of adventure, enjoy a locally inspired dinner, and reflect on the unmatched experience of motorcycle touring in the Klein Karoo.
Day 4: Rooiberg to Sutherland
After breakfast, we leave the serene Rooiberg Lodge and begin another unforgettable day of adventure motorcycling through South Africa’s remote interior. Today’s route takes us deeper into the Karoo — more specifically into the Moordenaars Karoo, a vast semi-arid region known for its dramatic desert scenery, towering rock formations, and crystal-clear night skies. We ride into the rugged Roggeveld Mountains, navigating the winding gravel roads of Anysberg Pass — a highlight for off-road motorcycle riders. This remote track offers panoramic views, thrilling curves, and a chance to spot wildlife like the rare Cape Mountain Zebra, making it a true bucket-list ride for adventure bikers. Historic Stop in Matjiesfontein: Midday, we take a well-earned break in the Victorian-era town of Matjiesfontein, one of South Africa’s best-preserved heritage villages. Once a stopover for weary travelers, Matjiesfontein is now a living museum that feels like stepping back in time. We’ll enjoy a hearty lunch at The Laird’s Arms, a classic Karoo pub next to the historic Lord Milner Hotel — a favourite among motorcycle tourers exploring the region. Gravel Passes and Wildflowers En Route to Sutherland: In the afternoon, our journey winds westward through three scenic gravel passes: Bakenshoogte, Smoushoogte, and Komsberg Pass. Spring riders are treated to blooming wildflowers on Bakenshoogte ("Beacon Heights"), adding even more colour to the stark Karoo landscape. We then descend through the Rooikloof Pass, a dramatic mountain pass offering sweeping views of the Sutherland basin — a photographer’s dream and a rider’s paradise. Arriving in Sutherland, Stargazing Capital of South Africa: Our day concludes in Sutherland, a small Karoo town perched at 1,450 metres above sea level on the Roggeveld Plateau. Known as South Africa’s coldest town, Sutherland is famous for its crisp air, star-filled skies, and its world-class Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) — the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. After checking into our accommodation, you’ll have time to explore the charming village before regrouping for a delicious group dinner under the stars.

Day 5: Sutherland to Loxton
We begin today’s ride in Sutherland, the astronomical capital of South Africa. Before we hit the gravel, we take a guided tour of the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) — the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. This is a true highlight of our journey, offering riders a rare chance to step inside one of the world’s leading space observatories. Perched high on a remote hilltop, SALT is a marvel of engineering and astrophysics. On the tour, we explore the inner workings of the observatory and learn how international astronomers use it to study distant galaxies, stars, and the structure of the universe. It’s an unforgettable experience that contrasts beautifully with the raw, rugged terrain we’ll ride through for the rest of the day. Scenic Gravel Riding through Bloupoort & Poortjie Passes: Back on the bikes, we follow the R356, turning off onto gravel just beyond the telescope site. From here, we ride through the Bloupoort Pass, a sweeping valley framed by mountain ridges near Vaalpunt Mountain. The terrain is ideal for dual-sport and adventure motorcyclists, with wide, open roads and incredible views around every bend. We continue through Poortjie Pass (also called Die Poort se Nek on some maps), a short but scenic cut through the Karoo’s ancient rock formations, before reaching the small town of Fraserburg. Fraserburg, Victorian Architecture, Karoo Cuisine & Endangered Wildlife: Fraserburg is full of old-world charm. It’s known for its Victorian and Edwardian buildings, quirky landmarks like the Peperbus (a pepperpot-shaped tower), and a reconstructed Trekboer Corbelled House, giving visitors a look into early settler life in the Karoo. We’ll enjoy a Karoo-style lunch at a local eatery in Fraserburg, where regional favourites and farm-fresh ingredients reflect the rugged beauty of the landscape. This hearty meal is the perfect fuel for the second half of the day. The region also forms part of the natural range of the critically endangered Riverine Rabbit. Though rarely seen, this elusive species is a reminder of the fragile ecosystem we pass through on this ride. Final Stretch to Loxton, True Karoo Country: After lunch, we continue toward Loxton, travelling through a sparsely populated region dotted with sheep farms, stone ruins, and open horizons. That evening, we stay on a working Karoo sheep farm just outside Loxton, where you can relax in comfort while experiencing the slower rhythm of rural life. With its wide gravel streets, low-slung historic buildings, and warm, small-town hospitality, Loxton is an authentic Karoo gem — a perfect stopover for riders seeking space, silence, and stories under the stars.
Day 6: Loxton to Graaff-Reinet
Leaving the sheep farm just outside Loxton, we head east across the wide-open Karoo plains—traversing scenic gravel roads and expansive farmland that capture the region’s rugged charm. Our first stop is in Victoria West, where we visit the historic Apollo Theatre — South Africa’s last remaining Art Deco cinema. Built in 1928 and renovated in the 1950s, this heritage-listed landmark remains a cherished community cinema. We’ll enjoy a coffee break, take a short guided tour of the Apollo Theatre, and stretch our legs before continuing the ride. Continuing east, we pass through the quaint town of Murraysburg, surrounded by open countryside and rolling hills that showcase the vast beauty of the Karoo. Early Afternoon Visit to the Valley of Desolation: In the early afternoon, we head to the breathtaking Valley of Desolation, located within Camdeboo National Park near Graaff-Reinet. This iconic natural wonder features towering dolerite columns rising sharply from the valley floor, offering panoramic views over the surrounding plains. The Valley of Desolation is one of the Eastern Cape’s most stunning and photogenic landscapes — a perfect spot to pause, explore, and reflect on your adventure. Lunch & Exploration at the Karoo Origins Fossil Centre: After soaking up the dramatic views, we arrive in Graaff-Reinet for a well-deserved Karoo-style lunch at the Karoo Origins Fossil Centre. This interactive museum showcases the renowned Rubidge Fossil Collection, with life-sized prehistoric displays and engaging exhibits that reveal the region’s ancient past. Enjoy your lunch in the centre’s café, surrounded by captivating paleontological treasures that bring the Karoo’s rich history to life. Evening in Graaff-Reinet, Final Group Dinner: Our tour concludes in historic Graaff-Reinet, South Africa’s fourth-oldest town, known for its beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture. In the evening, we gather for a farewell group dinner — a chance to celebrate the incredible journey, share memories, and toast to new friendships forged on the roads of the Karoo.
